Myopia Management

Myopia Management and Control

Myopia, also called nearsightedness, is an eye condition that causes blurry distance vision, but clear vision for objects up close. Vision correction is needed for performing everyday activities.

Myopia management, or myopia control, is the intervention of the rate the near-sightedness can advance. It is not possible to reverse or stop near-sightedness, but it is possible to slow it down which is the goal of myopia management. In children, it is especially important to catch and treat myopia as early detection offers more time to control the progression as the child ages.

There are treatment options available depending on the individual. Most common is wearing daily corrective glasses or contact lenses. Doctors have found significant results in the rate of slowing down near-sightedness with daily use of vision prescription lenses. Other treatments include specialty lenses such as orthokeratology, gas permeable lenses worn only at night, and/or medical eye drops. To determine what treatment plan is right, detailed eye measurements are needed. We use advanced testing beyond those in a routine eye exam.

At Family Eye Care, we encourage you to bring your child in for regular eye exams so we can catch eye disorders such as myopia at an early stage and keep their vision at its best.
